Inle Lake 2 day itinerary

For 2 days in Inle Lake, it is better to focus on the most spectacular sites around Inle Lake. Here is our suggestion for 2 days in Inle Lake

Day 1: Inle Lake Boat Trip

Spend your day uncovering the must-sees of Inle Lake including Phang Daw Oo pagoda, and Jumping Cat monastery before heading to the Inpow Khone community which is home to a silk village. On the way, you can see some other traditional villages on the waters like cheroot cigar or blacksmith. 

Day 2: See Indein Stupas and Khaung Daing village

Embark on a full-day tour from Nyaung Shwe to explore the picturesque Indein and Khaung Daing village. Admire the stunning 17th-century Buddhist pagodas and stupas in Indein, and peruse the local market. Afterward, immerse yourself in rural life in Khaung Daing, where you can discover locally produced food and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the village located on Inle Lake.

Inle Lake 3 day Itinerary

This itinerary differs itself with more local visits and going a little out of the tourist trail

Day 1: Inle Lake Guided Boat Tour

There are more things to learn when you have a tour guide for an Inle Lake trip. Along with the visit to the famous Phang Daw Oo, you`ll have opportunities to meet the long-neck hill tribe and learn more about the story of the floating gardens. Take your time to photograph the unique one-leg rowing scene from Inthar fisherman. 
Enjoy a beautiful sunset before heading to your hotel. 

Day 2: Inle Lake Biking to Indein - Return by boat

The total biking distance is about 31km and the road is quite pleasant as you cycle around the lake. On route, take time to see local schools and see the Indein sacred pagoda. The boatman will wait for you at the Indein stream to make you discover the less-visited side of Inle. Return to Nyang Shwe town or your resort by boat. 

Day 3: Inle Lake to Kakku then Red Mountain Winery

Venture out of the lake area to admire the sacred site of Kakku. We recommend you book a guided tour as it could be very interesting to explore the habitat of Pa-O hill tribe who lives in Kakku. 
On the way back, drop in Red Mountain Winery for one of the most impressive sunsets in Inle Lake.

Inle Lake 4 day Itinerary

Spending 4 days in Inle Lake is a very good idea if you want to travel at a slow pace and maximize your Inle experience. Accordingly, we propose you an Inle Travel Itinerary with some options:

Day 1: Inle Lake to Sagar

Sagar is one of the less-visited destinations in Inle Lake. It takes about 3,5 hours by boat to reach the site. It is known as sunken stupas which means when the water is up you may not see the full scale of the whole temple complex like when the lake has less water. Along with its main attraction, you`ll have a chance to observe local workshops on pottery and weaving. 

Day 2: Inle Lake floating market 

Raise up early to join local people at their floating market. It is not hard to find a perfect Instagram photo at this place. 
After that, you can travel further to the lake of Inle, capturing floating plantations and fishing activities. Keep the room to explore some local schools which are on the stilt houses. 

Day 3: Trekking or See Elephant at Green Valley 

As mentioned, you have 2 options to make your day occupied in a very active way. While trekking can be operated from Nyang Shwe town with breaks for the lake panorama, the Elephant camp requires a car journey to the Kalaw area which is an about 1-hour drive. 

Day 4: Inle Lake 5-day market or Nyang Shwe town

For those who fancy navigating further into the small canals of Inle then head to the rotating 5-day market. This is the rendezvous for many hill tribes and hence you should not miss your photography chances. 
Nyang Shwe town is another option which is good to spend a half day with its lively market, well-known monastery, and small museum. With this option, you`ll have half day to relax.

Phang Daw Oo Pagoda

Phaung Daw Oo boasts striking red and gold terraces and exquisite interior and exterior designs. Its walls are adorned with murals depicting Buddhist tales, while a lavish shrine housing five small Buddha statues of immense religious significance occupies the central area.
The golden-covered Buddha statues at Phaung Daw U Pagoda are famous Buddhist treasures, and daily devotees come to pay homage. The inhabitants of the stilted community encircling the lake rely on these captivating floating gardens to cultivate a diverse assortment of vegetables and fruits, essential to their traditional cuisine.
The most extensive and magnificent gardens are situated in the northwest part of the lake, where verdant rows of greenery stretch far beyond the residences. Visitors can observe the locals diligently tending to their thriving gardens each day from their modest wooden boats.

Rotating 5-day market

Another captivating attraction in Inle Lake is the famous Indein market that offers a diverse array of items ranging from textiles to Buddha statues. The market rotates among five different locations bordering the lake each day and all transactions take place from small, traditional wooden boats. To avoid congestion, it is advisable to visit early in the morning.
The lively water market draws a multitude of sellers from the local Shan and Intha communities, as well as numerous Pa-O ethnic people and the long-necked Padaung. This bustling and vibrant gathering presents the perfect opportunity to witness the distinctive and diverse cultures of the Inle Lake region.

Indein Stupas

The Indein Stupa Complex is an awe-inspiring sight, with a multitude of ornate spires that resemble a forest of stupas emerging from the earth.
The complex, nestled into the hillside, features over 1,600 stupas, some of which are adorned with intricate carvings and gilded embellishments. While a number of pagodas have been renovated, others show signs of wear and tear.
The complex is divided into two sections, with the first situated near the boat landing and adorned with images of mythical creatures. The second, located atop a hill, provides an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire Indein Stupa Complex and the surrounding area.

​Shwe Yaunghwe Kyuang

Shwe Yaunghwe Kyuang is an exquisitely crafted wooden monastery, famed for its oval-shaped windows. This is one of the popular stops for a Myanmar Photography Tour, and also the most photographed monasteries in the region.
Every day around 11 a.m., the monks gather to meditate, providing visitors with the chance to witness or participate in the meditative session.
On the temple's interior walls are numerous small alcoves, each containing a tiny Buddha statue. These statues were donated by people from various countries, including France, the U.S.A., and Australia. The walls, along with their colorful murals, painted tile floors, and statues, together create a vivid and breathtaking sight.

Kakku

Kakku is an impressive site of 2,500 ancient pagodas dating back to the 12th century. It offers a exceptional glimpse into the daily lives and ancient craftsmanship of the Pa-O people.
Most of the pagodas are uniform in size and arranged neatly in rows, while the magnificent main pagoda stands tall at 130 feet in the center of the complex.
The whole site is located in Pa-O territory on the outskirts of the Inle area. To access Kakku, you need to take a car journey for 3 hours through the scenic part of Shan State. Visiting Kakku is an excellent opportunity to witness an extraordinary example of ancient architecture and immerse oneself in the distinctive local culture, making it a highly recommended trip from Inle Lake.

When is the best time to make a travel plan to Inle Lake?

It is true that for a perfect Inle Lake Itinerary, you should consider the climate factor to make sure you benefit the most either for economy or sightseeing. 
Many of our travel experts agree that the dry season is the ideal time to visit Inle Lake as the temperature is slightly cooler and there is very little rain. While temperature variation throughout the year is minimal, you can expect a significant drop in temperature during the mornings and evenings.

Dry season

The period from November to February is typically considered the cool and dry season, with average temperatures ranging from 22 to 33°C (72 to 91°F). This time of year is ideal for outdoor activities, and January in particular offers plenty of sunshine, with an average of 11 hours per day. Although daytime temperatures can be warm, mornings and evenings are cool, so it's a good idea to bring a long-sleeved shirt and pants, as well as a sweater or thick jacket for warmth.

Hot Season

From March to May, the hot season prevails in Inle Lake, with temperatures ranging from about 24 to 35°C (75 to 95°F) and occasional rainfall, but mostly strong sunlight. If you plan to visit during this season, be sure to bring sunscreen for protection against the intense sunlight.
However, despite the heat, Inle Lake is still a great place to enjoy outdoor activities.
The most remarkable event of the hot season is the Thing Yan Festival, known as Water Festival or Burmese New Year.  It is celebrated nationwide and it brings much fun. Make your Inle Lake travel itinerary on the second week of April to attend this exciting festival!

Rainy Season

From May to October, Inle Lake experiences its rainy season, with frequent heavy rain and strong winds. The temperature during this period is typically cool and humid, with an average ranging from 23 to 33°C (73 to 91°F). How to travel to Inle Lake?

Basically from the three famous destinations including Yangon, Mandalay, and Yangon, there are flights to Heho - the main gateway to Inle Lake. From this airport, you can take a taxi to reach Nyang Shwe town within 1 hour. 
The internal buses connecting Yangon, Bagan, and Mandalay to Inle Lake are also available. 
The train is not so comfortable but could be a choice for adventure travelers. 

Is it safe to visit Inle Lake?

Inle Lake is a very safe travel destination in Myanmar. The locals are amiable and hospitable, and law enforcement is active in the area
It is a good place for solo travel.

Is it difficult for handicapped people to travel to Inle Lake?
