What is the best time to visit Myanmar?

The best time to visit Myanmar is during the cool and dry season, from November to April. This period offers the most comfortable weather with warm days and cool nights. Clear skies and minimal rainfall make it ideal for exploring temples, pagodas, and other outdoor attractions.
Peak Season: Keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.
Shoulder Seasons: October & March/April: These shoulder seasons offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
However, March and April can get quite hot in some parts of the country.
Rainy Season: May to September
While the rainy season brings lush greenery, it can also bring heavy rainfall and occasional flooding. Some areas may become inaccessible during this time.

Myanmar Entry Points

There are 3 main ways to enter Myanmar: by air, border crossing, and boating (via the border gate)

Enter Myanmar by air

3 international airports welcome foreign visitors in 2025: Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw. There are many flights from South Asia to Yangon and Mandalay that you can book online. 
We strongly recommend you to take the flight to Yangon as the flight frequency is high as the city is the biggest commercial hub of Myanmar too. 
You may not find direct flights from Europe, the USA or Australia to Yangon, a transit flight via Bangkok, Singapore or Malaysia could be the best option.

Myanmar Border Crossing

Myanmar shares its border with Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh and India. However, since the political conflicts happened, crossing the border to Myanmar is difficult. 
Since 2022, we have eased our Caravan Adventure due to the complicated situation at the border zone for the same reason. 
Consider taking the flights in and out instead in 2025. 

Entering Myanmar by boat/ cruise

Since 2021, international cruises have eased their operation to Myanmar. Accordingly, regional cruises in South Asia will not have stops in Yangon. 
Visitors can also not take a private yacht/ cruise from Thailand to Myanmar in the Andaman Sea. Instead, you can take day tours from Rannong or Phuket to explore a part of the Mergui Archipelago.

Myanmar Visa Procedure and Application

To enter Myanmar, you'll require a visa. Fortunately, obtaining one is a straightforward process. You can conveniently apply for an e-Visa online through the official website. Simply pay the visa fee, upload your passport photo, and designate your intended port of entry. The website indicates visa approval typically takes 3 business days, although it often occurs more quickly.
The e-Visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issuance and permits a stay of 4 weeks within Myanmar."  
You can also apply to Myanmar through a Myanmar Embassy overseas if convenient.

What to see in Myanmar

Myanmar offers a diverse range of incredible sights! Here are some of the must-sees:

Yangon

Yangon's crowning jewel is undoubtedly the Shwedagon Pagoda, a magnificent Buddhist temple adorned with gold leaf. Witnessing the pagoda bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun is an unforgettable experience.
While some may perceive Yangon as lacking in prominent landmarks or museums, we believe the city offers a wealth of engaging experiences. Strolling through the bustling streets and vibrant markets provides a captivating glimpse into local life. Alternatively, relax in a traditional tea house, observing the daily rhythms of the city unfold. Chinatown, with its vibrant street food scene and photogenic alleyways, is a must-visit.

Mandalay

Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, functions as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region. Day trips to iconic sites like the U Bein Bridge – the 2.5-kilometer long teak bridge frequently featured on travel guide covers – and Mandalay Hill, offering panoramic city views, are highly recommended.
While the city's energetic ambiance, characterized by a constant hum of motorbikes and ubiquitous backup generators, may not possess the same tranquility as Yangon, it offers a distinct urban experience. 
Things that draw you to Mandalay are the ancient capitals and the famous Jade Markets, unlike adventure on the Irrawaddy River.

Bagan

Bagan is a truly awe-inspiring spectacle, boasting over 200 temples scattered across the landscape. Explore this ancient wonder on foot, by bicycle, or by embarking on a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride with a knowledgeable guide.
Several temples offer rewarding climbs, providing breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunset.

Ngapali Beach

The main draw of Ngapali Beach is its soft white sand lined by the green coconut lines. During its sunny season, there are chances to uncover the marine life of Andaman Sea or simply soak up the sheer beach experience. 

Inle Lake

Inle Lake, nestled amidst the Shan Hills of Myanmar, is a truly unique and unforgettable destination.
This freshwater lake, renowned for its stunning scenery and the distinctive lifestyle of its inhabitants, offers a captivating glimpse into a traditional way of life.

Kalaw

Kalaw, a charming town situated just 50 kilometers from Inle Lake, serves as an excellent base for the renowned Kalaw-Inle Lake trek. Explore the vibrant local market, where you can savor traditional Shan noodles and purchase a bottle of locally produced wine.
Many travelers opt for a brief overnight stay in Kalaw before embarking on the three-day trek to Inle Lake. This increasingly popular trek provides an opportunity to admire the breathtaking mountain scenery and encounter charming villages nestled amidst the picturesque landscape.  

Golden Rock

Situated within Kyaikto Township in Thaton District, Kyaikto is an ideal base for visiting the renowned Golden Rock, one of Myanmar's most iconic landmarks. A moderate 45-minute climb leads you to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site perched precariously atop a colossal granite boulder.

The Kyat: Myanmar's Official Currency
The official currency of Myanmar is the Kyat (pronounced "chat"), denoted by "K" or "MMK." It's essential to carry Kyat for most transactions within the country.

ATMs

ATMs are becoming increasingly common in major cities and tourist areas, but they may be less prevalent in rural areas. Card Acceptance: While ATM availability is improving, it's crucial to inform your bank about your travel plans to Myanmar. Some banks may restrict international transactions, so ensure your card is enabled for international use and withdraw sufficient cash beforehand.
Withdrawal Limits: Daily withdrawal limits may apply, so be mindful of your cash needs.
Currency Exchange Exchange Bureaus: Licensed money changers can be found at airports, banks, and hotels.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates can vary, so compare rates at different locations before exchanging your currency. US Dollars are widely accepted in some tourist areas and for larger expenses.
Cash is the best in Myanmar. It is advisable to use credit cards when necessary only. 
Tips for Managing Your Money in Myanmar:  having smaller denominations of Kyat will be helpful for smaller purchases at local markets and street vendors. 

Myanmar Foods 

Burmese foods are delicious. There are influences from Indian, Chinese and regional cuisines like Shan or Mon. Here are some of the dishes you should try while traveling in Myanmar:

• Mohinga: This savory fish soup is considered Myanmar's national dish. It's a flavorful broth with rice noodles, fish cake, and aromatic herbs.
• Shan Noodles: A popular dish from Shan State, featuring rice noodles in a spicy and tangy broth with chicken or pork.
• Tea Leaf Salad (Laphet Thoke): A unique salad made with fermented tea leaves, mixed with peanuts, sesame seeds, garlic, and other ingredients.

We strongly recommend you to support the local businesses. Try your best to use local services which bring benefits to the local families and people. Stay in a private-owned hotel, spend your meal at a family-run restaurant, or rent a bike at a local shop.

Respect the local culture

As a predominantly Buddhist nation, Myanmar values cultural respect. When visiting temples and pagodas, dress modestly and always remove your shoes before entering.

Be flexible with your itinerary

You may need to make changes during your holiday to Myanmar due to some of the reasons like flight cancellation, road blocked. Get ready to add 1 more day to your itinerary or at least be willing to change the transport.
