Things you need to know before going to Myanmar
It’s only since recent years Myanmar is opening its borders to tourists. For a long time the Southeast Asian country was hard to reach, unsafe and for this reason, not so popular for travelers. Today, this is the biggest trump for the country: an authentic culture yet to be discovered. Birmese people are not so used to tourists so, you might wanna check out a few things you need to know before going to Myanmar.

Myanmar is more expensive than other Southeast Asian countries
Don’t expect Myanmar to be as cheap as say… Thailand or Vietnam, cause it’s not. Accomodation is quite expensive but food and transport isn’t. For a hotel you pay just a little less than Europe. Transport however, we paid only a few thousand kyats for a 6 hour bus trip (a few dollar) and traveling with train is even cheaper (and way slower!)Some cities, you have to pay entrance fees
Bagan, Inle lake… both of them are quite touristic and when you enter the city zone you’ll have to pay a fee. For example, Inle lake will cost you 10USD and Bagan has already risen the price up to 25USD. Not cheap but we had no trouble paying for it since the money goes to conservation of the site.Myanmar has ATM’s
There was a time travelers needed to bring new American dollars to Myanmar, but that time is over. Nowadays you can pay everywhere in kyat and most touristic places also have atm’s in the street making it possible to withdraw extra money. You can hear kissing sounds in the restaurant
Not that the waitress is hitting on you but it’s the way Birmese people are calling for someone to order food. You can hear the sound in the restaurants as well as on the streets. It might seem strange for us, but you can try it when you want to order food. Just make sure your girlfriend doesn’t mind when you’re calling the waitress. They Love to Chew Betel and Spit Anywhere
“HOERRGHHHH! CUUHHH!” Don’t get a weird look on your face if you see people making this sounds. Chances are big that they are chewing betel. Chewing betel nut is a national pastime. They look like green leaves and sometimes they spice it up with tobacco. This is why Myanmar drivers always open their windows (and don’t use airconditioning), so they can spit out the betel easily. Also, if you see red marks on the floor, it’s not blood but just the stain caused by betel. And people smiling at you with red-coloured teeth are no vampires.A beautiful place to experience Buddha Spirit
If you see someone sell birds near a temple, it doesn’t mean they are having a pet shop. In buddhism, setting birds free is said to earn good karma.Majority of Burmese people practice Buddhism and you can see stupas in almost every villages throughout the country. This is part of the reason why the local are very gentle as they are very Buddhism oriented.
Thanaka's charm
When walking through the streets of Yangon, you’ll see a lot of people with their faces covered in a yellowish kind of paste. This is called Thanaka. It’s being used by Birmese women as some kind of cosmetics but apparently it’s preventing sunburn as well.Myanmar Travel Guide
