Amongst all the Buddhist festivals in Myanmar, the Thadingyut festival or known as the festival of lights is undoubted a must-see if you visit the country in October.

Festival History

As a custom, Thadingyut happens at the end of the Buddhist lent and is the second most popular festival in Myanmar after Thingyan Festival (New Year Water Festival)
The festival lasts for 3 days with full of lights in the evening. These days are 2 days before and after plus the full moon day which is the middle of the month according to the lunar calendar.  
Illuminations are lit up to celebrate the anniversary of Buddha's return from the celestial abode where He had spent the lent teaching the celestials about His Law.

Local Celebration

During thet Festival, there are musical performance known as Zat Pwes, free movie shows and stage shows mostly everywhere in the country.
More food stalls are on the streets to offer local specialities as well toys for kids, kitchen utensils and other useful stuffs.
For the main celebration of the Festival of light, pagodas and monasteries are lit up while local Burmese offers more alms for the minks. 
This is a special occasion to capture the illumision that changes the street colors in all big cities.
