Mergui Archipelago Travel Guide

Mergui Archipelago Travel Guide

Situated in the far southern part of Myanmar, within the Tanintharyi Region, the Mergui Archipelago is a dazzling natural jewel. One of the last unspoilt paradises of the world, the shimmering waters of the Andaman Sea are dotted with greenery-clad islands and islets. Few people live in the area, and even fewer visitors come to these spectacular islands.

Various Islands

The Mergui Archipelago (also sometimes known as the Pashu Islands) is home to more than 800 islands of all shapes and sizes, with the largest being Kadan Kyun (King Island). Covering around 450 square kilometres, the island also has the highest peak in the island group, French Bay Peak. Other significant islands include the western Auriol Island, the oddly-shaped Bentinck Kyun, the southern Christie Island, Kanmaw Kyun, the large Lanbi Island, Ngwe Kyun, which is also known as Money Island, and Thahtay Island, which is one of the closest islands to the Thai border.

Local People

People who live around the archipelago are largely from the Moken ethnic group. A traditional people, they are sometimes referred to as sea gypsies. They fish and build boats in line with how their ancestors lived many, many years ago. The Moken generally live on their boats during the dry season, although they do tend to live on dry land when the heavy rains come.

Diving

The Mergui Archipelago is a favourite spot for diving-enthusiasts, with the calm and clear waters home to an abundance of aquatic life. There are large patches of coral around the islands, and, in addition to a colourful array of tropical fish, divers might also see huge sea-dwelling creatures like whale sharks and killer whales. The best time to visit if diving is your main priority is between the months of December and April.

Wildlife

Most of the islands are blanketed in thick rainforest and jungle and home to a fascinating array of flora and fauna. Creatures that call the archipelago home include monkeys, deer, wild pigs, and many types of bird, reptile, rodent, and insect.

Beaches

Many of the islands are fringed by pristine white sand beaches, ideal for taking it easy and relaxing in the sunshine. Enjoy the views, take a dip in the ocean, and unwind. Some islands also have dense patches of mangroves, whilst others have craggy cliffs, rocky shores, and secluded bays. Boat trips are a good way to explore several islands and fully appreciate the area’s natural splendour.
Accessible to foreign tourists since the late 1990s, a visit to the Mergui Archipelago is sure to make for an unforgettable trip filled with wonder.
