Himalaya Trek in Myanmar

Himalaya Trek in Myanmar

Boasting nine of the ten highest mountains on the planet, the majestic Himalaya Mountains are a magnet for people who love challenging treks and enjoying spending time in the great outdoors. Located in South Asia, part of the mountain range falls within the boundaries of Myanmar. Snaking through Kachin State in the northern part of the country, you’ll find some of Southeast Asia’s most exhilarating treks, as well as the region’s highest mountain – Hkakabo Razi.

You will start any trekking experiences in the Burmese Himalayas in a small mountain town, Putao. Close to the borders with India and China, most visitors arrive by air. There are rough roads, accessible only in the summer months, but these are mainly used by locals. Whilst Putao can be visited permit-free, permits are required to undertake treks in the surrounding areas. Local guides are required for treks longer than few hours / a day.

What part of the Himalaya mountain is in Myanmar?

The area in north Myanmar called Putao where the highest peak Hkakabo Razi located is part of Himalayan mountain range. It has high altitude ranging from 1500 metres above the sea level. This is home to the biggest national park in the country. It houses many ethnic hill tribes whose cultures are very unique and worth to be learnt.

Where to trek in Putao ?

An area rich with wildlife and closed off to tourism until just a few years ago, some fantastic treks in Maynmar’s Himalayas include:

Hkakabo Razi Base Camp

Unclimbed until 1997, it is unlikely that most trekkers will attempt the gigantic mountain itself. Standing at just less than 6,000 metres, experienced hikers can push themselves on a multi-day trek to the base camp. The route leads through several ethnic villages and dense jungle. Rare black orchids grow in this area and wildlife includes bears, monkeys, deer, red pandas, takins, goats, wild pigs, and numerous species of bird, reptile, butterfly, and insect. With low temperatures all throughout the year, it is imperative that hikers are well-prepared for the climate.

Phon Gan Razi

Also sometimes spelt as Phone Kan Razi, trekking this mountain will take around ten – eleven days. Sitting close to the border with India, the mountain stands at 3,635 metres high. Offering incredible vistas, meet peoples such as the Kachin, Rawang, and Lisu, and spot lots of native wildlife. A walker’s paradise, enjoy a part of the world that has been, so far, relatively untouched by outsiders.

Phone Yinn

Another stunning mountain to conquer in the vicinity of Putao, Phone Yinn is quite challenging towards the end, with dramatic jagged cliffs and narrow paths. Snow-covered peaks can be seen all around, and the views are out of this world. Take in picturesque valleys and rugged terrain with a multi-day hike (of around 10 days) in this beautiful part of the country.

Naungmung

Suitable for experienced trekkers of all ages, the trek to Naungmung leads to the last town in northern Myanmar. It takes you through mountainous forests, allowing you to meet local people in their villages. Combining glorious nature and culture, it’s definitely an exciting trek to undertake.
Other beautiful and exciting adventures to have on a Myanmar Himalaya trek include Nam Lent, the remote Ma Doi, and Phangran Razi.

How many days should I spend on the Himalaya trek in Myanmar ?

4 to 6 days is a perfect time to spend on a trek in Putao. These Myanmar Trekking Tours often require careful arrangement since transportation is not easy. There is no daily flight and in some periods of time, there is no flight at all.

Putao has not only mountain peaks to challenge your feet, our Putao Trekking Tour offers you a different way to appreciate the local life, get the best of local interaction as well.
