Traditional Costumes

The traditional costumes of the Kayin (or Karen) people have emphasized red for hundreds of years, although this is gradually changing and many clothes sport a range of bright colours. Also look for “Done Yaein,” a local dance in which men jump in the air, waving their arms, while ladies sway gently and twirl handkerchiefs.

Kawgun Cave

While traveling to Mount ZweKabin, take a detour to Kawgun Cave, which contains terracotta Buddha images and engraved bricks. Also visit Kyaukkalutt Pagoda, reflected in the water, which offers a vision of tranquility and peace.

On the mountain itself, you’ll find more caves containing Buddhist art. One has a jaw-dropping more than 10,000 identical statues of Buddha, stretching back as far as the eye can see. At the base, Lumbini Garden has even more statues.

In the afternoon, stop by the Kayin State Cultural Museum, where you can see displays of Kayin (Karen) literature, figurines and musical instruments. End the day watching the sun set over the river from the tranquil grounds of Shweyinmyew Pagoda.
