Travel to Mrauk U

Mrauk U can be accessed by road from Yangon, Bagan, and Sittwe, although arguably the best way to get to the town is by boat.  Travel the delightful backwaters and river from Sittwe and relax onboard as you watch life along the water’s edge unfold as you pass by.  You will see basic local houses, fishermen trying to make a good catch, people bathing and washing in the waters, and children happily splashing about.  It is a great way to take it slowly and see another side of beautiful Burma.  Once you arrive in Mrauk U, by any means, it is easy to get out and about by foot or rented bicycle.  Trishaws are also available and you can explore by horse and trap. 

What to See

There are many pagodas and temples around the area, as well as Chin villages, museums, and galleries.  The local market is at the heart of the local community and it is well worth a visit when you are in town.  The market is also a good place to stop for a bite to eat, with a selection of inexpensive local dishes.  There are other restaurants around Mrauk U, as well as some small places to enjoy a drink in the evenings.  You will not find much night life to speak of – it is definitely not a party town!  The quiet atmosphere really does add to the town’s appeal though.  There is a decent selection of places to stay in Mrauk U, with a range of places catering to different budgets and expectations.
