Myanmar Before Arrival Kit

Myanmar Before Arrival Kit

Myanmar is emerging as one of the hot travel destination of Southeast Asia, a country that recently opened up its borders up to tourism. In this enchanting country you will witness epic history, extreme natural beauty, gentle and kind people, and a profusion of golden temples, pagodas and stupas that reflect the country’s strong Buddhist faith. Gaze upon the remarkable Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon (Rangoon) with its towering stupa covered in pure gold. In the ancient Buddhist capital of Pagan (Bagan), visit some of the 2,200 temples, an astounding collection that rivals Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Travel to Mandalay of Rudyard Kipling fame, or cruise the tranquil waters of Inle Lake, where boatmen row by foot past colorful floating gardens.

Passports

Check your passport validity before applying Myanmar Visa because your passport should have at least six months remains valid on the day you intended to enter Myanmar. If your passport does not, renew your passport before applying Myanmar Visa.
To enter Myanmar, a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of intended departure is required by all Australian, Canadian, USA and other EU nationals.

Vaccinations

There are no required or mandatory vaccinations, although it is strongly recommended to vaccinate against Malaria if visiting rural areas. Yellow fever vaccination is NOT a requirement, unless you arrive from an endemic country of Africa or South America. Vaccinations against Japanese B encephalitis, tuberculosis and hepatitis B are sometimes recommended.

 Money Issue

It is important that you bring sufficient cash into Myanmar to sustain you throughout the trip, as credit cards are not widely accepted in Myanmar. We recommend that you bring crisp, clean $50 and $100 USD notes (no marks or tears, 2006 series or later) to exchange for the local currency. Travelers checks are not accepted. The currency in Myanmar is the kyat (pronounced chet,) but US dollars are also frequently accepted. VERY few places accept credit cards or the using fee is rather high ( 5-6% of total charge). Officially, the exchange rate is 973 kyat to $1USD, but often it’s regarded as $1 = 1,000, so if you can pay for things in USD you’ll actually be paying slightly less.
ATMs are now available in big cities and famous travel spots. You can withdraw certain amounts of money for every transaction. You will receive the local currency instead of US dollar.

What to wear

Light weight clothes with waterproofs are recommended all year round. In higher altitudes however it is best to take slightly warmer clothes, but nothing too heavy. As a rule shoulders and knees should be covered when entering religious sites.
If you travel during the summer time, please take a rain coat or you can buy it upon arrival.

 What to Pack

There are certain items that you must not forget to pack.
-Long pants / skirt (required on Pagodas)
- Insect repellent cream (no public pest control program)
- Water resistant sunscreens
- Deodorant (hot and humid weather)
- Breathable clothes that dry quickly
- Flashlight (frequent electricity blackouts in Myanmar)
- Hidden wallet
- Rain cover/Umbrella (from May to October)
- Prescription medication and first aid kit
