Naypyidaw Travel Guide
Naypyidaw is the capital city of Burma, and as a purpose built city it is very organized and ordered when compared to the rest of the country.
Indeed, it can often seem really neat and orderly in comparison to many other cities across Asia. Naypyidaw is often referred to as NPT for short. The majority of the population is made up of officials and government workers, as well as their families.
Sitting between two mountain ranges, the journey to Naypyidaw is often as exciting as the final destination itself. That is, of course, unless you fly in! It is well connected to other parts of the country by road, and a rail line links the capital city with the previous capital of Yangon. You can get around the city by motorbike and tuk tuk.

Whilst there aren’t so many places of interest in the city when compared to other interesting towns and cities around the country, part of the fun in visiting is to see a completely different side to Burma. Also, the city was built in complete secrecy by the ruling military junta in the early 1990s, so you can also enjoy the feeling of wandering around a previously secret place!
The enormous Parliament Building is one of the main sights in Naypyidaw. Other attractions include the Peace Pagoda, museums, statues, the zoo, the safari park, and an interesting herb garden. For some fun and relaxation, head to Ngalaik Lake Gardens. You can enjoy some watery fun on slides and a beach. There are also a couple of golf courses in the city.
There is decent shopping in the city; Naypyidaw Myoma Market, Thapye Chaung Market, Capital Mall and Junction Mall are some good places to shop. Most accommodation options are located within a special hotel zone. There is also a good selection of places to eat and drink, although the night life isn’t really that lively.
