Shwebo Travel Guide

Located 100 km (64 miles) North-West of Mandala, you’ll find the city of Shwebo inside the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. To be more precise, Shwebo is located on the Eastern Bank of the river of Chindwin. The founder of the Kone Baung Dynasty, King Alaungpaya, has Shwebo as a native town in his empire. This town used to be the royal capital of Myanmar.

Shwebo is not such a special place of interest for tourists but if you’re planning to travel to Bagan via Pakokku and Monywa, Shwebo is a pleasant enough place to be stayed at for a few nights. Snakes and “thanakha” are the reason why Shwebo is well-known locally. Alaungpaya used this city to get victories in his battles and due to this, some tourist even consider that it is good luck to visit this “Victory Land”.
Astounding rest-houses and hotels can be booked online if you’re looking forward to traveling to this historic place. The place has more importance in terms of its ancient history, and the main historic fascinations this place has are specified below in this article.

Hwebo Aung Myay
King Alaungpaya used to make a staging point in this place before preparing for his battles. Due to this reason, people now believe visiting this site will give them luck and victory. This place is also known as “Victory Land”.

Myao Daunt Pagoda
King Alaungpaya paid a visit to the most revered Shwemawdaw Pagoda located in lower Myanmar after his victory over Bago. Inspired by this, he built a pagoda with a similar architecture in Shwebo; the construction took only ten months.
The Myao Daunt Pagoda stands 30 feet (9m) high.

Yadana Mingalar Palace
This prestigious palace is a royal place in Shwebo, Myanmar. It was built in 1753 A.D. by King Alaungphaya U Aung Zeya. King Alaungphaya was the initial founder of the dynasty of Konebaung.
This palace was adorned with ten kinds of ancient Burmese art in detail. Fifty-four apartments and halls were featured in this majestic palace. Unfortunately, this palace was shattered in 1766 in a war. However, after 228 years (i.e. in 1994), The Department of Archaeology excavated this site. The archaeological site unveiled the buried palace platform. It was reconstructed successfully 5 years after its excavation.

Hanlin City
If you travel 18km South of Shwebo into the Upper Myanmar, you’ll find yourself in Pyu which has in it a momentous abode; The Hanlin City (also known as Great Hanlin). This place can be accessed by a road which crosses the Moksogyon railway-station.
A group of villages having several smaller yet wonderful Pagodas are located here in this city. Great Hanlin is built in the South of the ancient fortified city. Hot saline springs are a notable feature of its vicinity.

Kyauk Myaung
This is a small town found near the Western bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River, 29 km East of Shwebo. The prime reason for its fame is its production of lovely glazed pottery. Large Martaban Jars are made here which were used as water containers in the rural areas of Myanmar.
