Sittwe Travel Guide

Sittwe Travel Guide

Located in the western part of Burma in Rakhine State, Sittwe is a common stopping point for people en route to the stunning Mrauk U.  If you have time, however, spending a few days in Sittwe itself is recommended.

With many people dashing through, if you do stay you will have the feeling of having the place almost to yourself, without lots of other tourists visiting the same sights.  There are some interesting things to see and do in Sittwe, and it is well worth a few days’ stay.
The quickest way to get to the city is by air, and there are flights from both Yangon and Mandalay.  Buses are also available, although they do take a very long time.  Try and avoid the coastal route if possible – this is easily the longest way to get to Sittwe!  Within the city you can explore the sights by rented bicycle.  There are also lots of trishaws just waiting to take you around the city.
The Central Market is a lively and colourful affair, with lots of sights, sounds, and smells.  It is a great place to experience a traditional market and see where the locals shop.  Next door, there is a large fish market, selling an array of fish and seafood.
There are several interesting museums in Sittwe, including Maka Kuthala Kyaungdawgyi and Rakhaing State Cultural Museum.  There are also colonial buildings to admire and glorious temples to visit.
At dusk you can see a great many bats leaving their roosts and streaking across the sky, in search of food on their nightly expeditions.  It really is a sight to behold!  You could also take a wander along the Strand to The Point for amazing sunset views.
Sittwe is a great city for foodies, and you will find delicious cuisine that is different to in other parts of the country.  Traditional food from the area tends to be fairly spicy.  You will also find places that serve food from other parts of the country, as well as Indian and Chinese dishes.  There are some nice places to enjoy a quiet drink in the evenings.
