Temples you should see in Bagan

Bagan entices all visitors for its thousand years pagodas and temples poke out the green palm fringes and lush local plantation. While balloon ride offers a stunning bird eye view on the gilded spires, exploring by bike or by car gives you the more authentic look of Bagan. These temples will help you designing a good itinerary to explore the area uniquely:

Ananda Temple

Built in 1091, Ananda had witnessed the change of Bagan over 900 years so far.Ananda is listed on all guide books about Bagan archaeological zone for certain reason.
The temple houses four Buddha statues adorned with gold leaf, representing attainment of the state of Nirvana : Gotama faces west, Kakusandha faces north, Konagamana faces east, and Kassapa faces south

Shwezigon Pagoda

This golden pagoda differs itself from others by golden flash, outstanding architecture dedicated to Therevada Buddhism. According to Bagan people, Shwezigon shrines a collection of Buddha relics including collar bones and a tooth. Legend has it that the location of Shwezigon was chosen by a white elephant. 

Shwesandaw Pagoda

As one of the best places to admire sunrise in Bagan, Shwesandaw is crowded in the afternoon. However, the pagoda itself is quite remarkable. It is said to be buit in 1057 by Anawrahta, the father of the Burmese nation. 
Visit the pagoda during the day time, its awe-inspiring atmosphere will attract all your senses.

Dhammayangyi Temple

There are some monuments were built during three year reign of the tyrant King Narathu and Dhammayangyi Temple is one of them. In any photo from balloon, it looks like an Egyptian pyramid, big and steep. It is said to be haunted due to an imperial story while many locals think there are hidden treasures behind the wall. 
Do not miss photographing the  rare double Buddha statues.

Gawdawpalin Temple
King Narapatisithu decided to build this temple after finishing Sulamani temple. He did not complete the construction, but his son Htilominlo. The whole architect reaches  about 180 feet high and shares the similarity with Sulamani.
