Tips for Planning Independent Burma Travel

In this article, our travel expert Zaw and many of bloggers, the real post Myanmar travelers share their ideas of how to prepare your best independent Myanmar / Burma Travel

Getting to Burma

There are 2 things you should consider when planning a trip to Burma at this very first step: Visa and international Flights.

Burma Visa
Traditionally, if you live in big cities like Paris, New York, London, it is likely to be easy for you to apply for Myanmar / Burma visa via embassy. This is very cost effective.
These days, Burma Government have made lots of effort to launch Evisa system which allows you to obtain a visa within 3 working days. The official website for visa is https://evisa.moip.gov.mm. You can apply through a visa link on the right side of our site, the service has good guarantee policy: have visa or refund.

International Flights
There are 3 international airports that you can fly in Myanmar including Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyidaw. The most convenient way to getting to Burma is to book return flights to Yangon.
Bangkok airport is a good base if you want to fly to Mandalay or Naypyidaw.

Trip Cost and Money

Currency
In Burma, the local currency is Kyat. Though US dollar is widely accepted as well Euro, it is much better to exchange money when you arrive, by this way, you can fund your travel even in the remote area.
Money is at best value for exchanging if they are new notes, no fold, no tease.
Cash machine is now available in the popular tourist spots like Yangon, Mandalay, etc. You can withdraw kyat equivelant maximum $400 per day.

Price
Please keep in mind that Myanmar is not a cheap destination. Though there are more travel service providers, more hotels than decades ago, the country is still more expensive than its neighbors like Laos or Cambodia.

Easy Travel
Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake and Ngapali Beach are named top 5 destinations in Myanmar which means travelling to these places is easy. The inter-travel are facilitied with bus, train and flights. Accordingly, spending about 8 to 14 days would be good for the following itinerary :
Yangon ( 2 days ) - Bagan ( 2 days ) - Mandalay ( 2 to 3 days ) - Inle Lake ( 2 days ) - Ngapali Beach ( 2-4 days ) - Yangon

Explore beneath the Surface
Southern Myanmar is very seducing while the mysterious north is a perfect call for adventure.

For those who love the beach, island and exotic Burmese culture, this itinerary is perfect to keep your 8 to 15 days busy:

Getting Around in Burma

Taxi and Car Rental
Metre taxis are now available in big cities with air conditioning. You will mostly have no difficulty for informing the driver your destination. For a long travel, you can even negotiate the rate.
There is no Car Rental service like Europe or America, Car Rental means you hire a car with a driver. For this service, please contact our travel expert for better quotation on specific route/ journey.
Recently, Uber and some other sharing car service are available in Yangon ( not countrywide )

Boat and Ferry
Boat trips in Inle Lake can be reserved online or simply grab one at Nyang Shwe town with negotiable price.
Boat from Mandalay to Mingut for return way can be booked at the hotel or with local travel agency.
For a day trip from Mandalay to Bagan by ferry, you can reserve online through official websites of ferry companies. There are various categories which are classified by its service and comfort.
Ferry from Yangon to Myeik takes about 7 hours and tickets are purchased at its counter near the river port.

Train
Generally, train is safe but not really comfortable in Myanmar. The train network does not cover the large area of Myanmar. Taking a Myanmar Train Journey for foreigner means you will buy first class ticket for soft seat or sleeping berths.
The train often takes longer time than bus. A ride from Yangon to Mandalay takes more than 10 hours while from Yangon to Bagan, the overnight train is the most suitable option.

Myanmar Accommodations

Most of hotels and resorts have websites which allows you to book far in advance. Booking tools like booking.com, agoda are also good sources to find your rooms before you arrive.
You can always have free consultancy from our staff or simply browse our Myanmar Hotels which vary from 3 star to the high end standar.

Those who do backpacking can find plenty hostels by browsing famous travel blog or check out the travel forums.

Homestay is only available for trekking areas like Kalaw, Pindaya, Hsipaw, Mrauk U or Chin state. At these locations, homestay are at basic condition with mattress and blanket while toilet is simple.
