Mrauk U is about 11 kilometers to the East of the Kaladan River. Its countryside is full of marshes and lakes, and the town itself is hilly. This town was the capital of Mrauk U Kingdom from 1430 to 1785 AD.
Mrauk U is known for its tropical monsoon climate; it receives 1200 millimeters of rain from the Southwestern Monsoon which makes it one of the rainiest regions of Myanmar. Mrauk U is also an important trading hub as it links to the Bay of Bengal. Due to these characteristics, this town is known for massive tourism. The Remains of Wethali

Seven miles North of Mrauk U are the evident remnants of the Kingdom of Wethali. This kingdom was established in 372 AD my Mahataing Chandra. The kingdom lasted until the 8th century, as said by archeologists.
In its central palace site, the walls are 1650 feet high, but the main attraction is the majestic statue of Buddha sitting in a Rakhine style. This statue is said to be carved from a single piece of stone. Overall, this site makes an interesting archaeological wonder and tourists love to hear the legendary stories behind each and every inch of the site.

Sanda Muhni Phara Gri Kyaung Taik

This place is a monastery at a hilltop which contains a statue of Buddha which is said to be carved from the precious metal left over by Mahamuni Buddha. Sanda Munhi is the name of the statue, hence the namesake of the monastery.
The main hall of this monastery is festooned with other Buddha images and the monks are always happy to explain every story about these pictures to the tourists.

Andaw Paya

The Andaw Paya Shrine is similar to an eight-sided monument having rectangular prayer halls in its East and multispired sanctuary in the West. Sixteen stupas are aligned in a U shape in the Northern, Western and Southern platforms of the shrine. In a nutshell, the place is a wondrous offering to the Buddha having the exquisite legions of statues and buildings.

L’amitie Art Gallery

If you’re looking for an inimitable art gallery, then this is the place to see. The ancient painting techniques are indeed a marvel one cannot dare to miss. This gallery is, in fact, just a simple hut having eye-catching opuses made of just oils and pastels. But the fine details of the artifacts are wonderful and impressive. The painters of the canvases are Shwe Maung Thar (he is the same man who painted the ceiling panels of the Central Hall of Shittaung Paya) and his son Khine Minn Tun.

Pitaka Taik

This building is one of the seven libraries left in Mrauk U out of the total forty-eight. This dense sumptuous building was built in 1591 by King Minphalaung and now it is protected under a maroon and blue shelter. For tourism purposes, this site ought not to be squandered since it’s intense aesthetic aura is a spectacle to be looked upon.
Mrauk U still remains one of the hidden gems in Myanmar. Its mysterious charm exodus from ancient landmarks and unique local hill tribes are the main sources for all the adventures to the area. Check our Mrauk U Tour for better idea !
